In \expndtw4 the eleventh century the Ghaznavides gradually dis\-\expndtw3 placed the Arabs in Sind, but it appears that the con\-\expndtw2 quests of Mahmud of Ghazni were not so thorough in \expndtw7 lower as in upper Sind. The reference to the "Daivaputra-Sahi-Saha-\expndtw0 nu\loch\af0\hich\af0\dbch\f1\cchs0 \'a3\hich\af0\dbch\af1\loch\f0\cchs0 ahl" in the Allahabad pillar inscription of Samudra-\expndtw3 gupta has rightly been interpreted to suggest that prin\-\expndtw11 ces of the Kushan race survived in the Punjab and \expndtw2 the Kabul valley until about the middle of the fourth \expndtw6 century A.D. The great Moslem scholar, Alberuni,\super 1 \nosupersub\expndtw5 gives us a little more information. According to him, \expndtw9 the descendants of Barhatakin, one of them being \expndtw5 Kanik (Kaniska), whom he calls Hindu Turks, ruled \expndtw1 Kabul for sixty generations under the style \i Shahiya, \i0\expndtw0 evidently a variant of the Sanskrit \i Sdht \i0 or of the Kushan \i\expndtw7 Shah. \i0 Alberuni may or may not be correct in stating \expndtw11 that all these monarchs belonged to one family, or}\par \pard \plain \cbpat8\qj\li0\fi392\ri2974\sb302\sa0\sl-202\slmult0 \f1\fs20{\b0\i\cf1\charscalex100\expndtw-2\f1\cchs0\lang1033\fs21 ^ Alberunfs India, \i0 Eng.
